john -> PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/24/2003 9:01:50 PM)

rjw has requested PI/PO error scans but the real question is...which LiteOn reader we should use? We made some quick testing and the results can be found over here, while the PI/PO scans over here.

The tested drives (with latest firmware) were:

- LiteOn LTD-163D
- LiteOn LTD-165H
- LiteOn LTC-48161H

We should add more results from other LiteOn DVD enabled drives (LTD-166S, LSC-24081M, etc...) soon. As you can see, the results are at least confusing, since no drive's result can match other one...

The LTD-163D seems to give the lowest results with DVD+-R media, while the highest with DVD+-RW media [B)]

Dolphinius_Rex -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/25/2003 12:17:21 AM)

Why not e-mail Karr Wang and ask the expert of LiteON himself?

john -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/25/2003 12:38:56 AM)

Already done, but sharing our thoughts shows the various troubles we are having to adopt a new test series [:o)]

Dolphinius_Rex -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/25/2003 5:20:15 AM)

Maybe ask LiteON *really* nicely for a pre-release of their new DVD Burner [:D]

MP3Mogul -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/25/2003 5:28:32 AM)

That is an intriguing thought Dolphinius. Maybe they would be "kind" enough to do that. That would lend a "hand" to local testing.

Dolphinius_Rex -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/25/2003 7:09:20 AM)

hrm, it would give free publicity to liteON, as well as Karr Wang's software... that might be enough to make them consider it [:)]

john -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/25/2003 10:11:13 AM)

I heard the LiteOn DVD writer is just a Sony OEM drive [:o)], not to sure if that rumour is 100% correct, we have some LiteOn reviews coming up, and we hope LiteOn DVD Writer to be one

Dolphinius_Rex -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/25/2003 11:29:41 AM)

From what I've heard the current LiteON DVD Writer is a Sony OEM, but they have a DVD+R/W drive that is their own in the works... and this drive should be able to be flashed to include DVD-R/W writing as well... I might be mistaken though, it is a little confusing! [:I]

I'm looking forward to those LiteON reviews John! [:D]

john -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/25/2003 5:02:35 PM)

Maybe this is true, i hope to find the truth soon

rjw -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (5/28/2003 5:40:51 PM)

Yes I requested them and the same day I allready noticed the problems.
So what to do next.
You can drop dvd-rw/dvd+rw since there to hard to test good. Any phase change disc by the way is hard to test.

Still we then have the problems for DVD-R/DVD+R and pressed media.
Now 3 options.

1 Find out which comes closes to a AUDIODEV CATS analyzer. Some people are allready checking this and as soon as there is news I will let you guys now.
2 The average of the 3 drives. THis one costs to many time and is quite incorrect.
3 Just choose a drive and then give the detailed description of the meassureing method.(List the meassureing drive and the procedure) Since PO/PI is drive deppendant this is no problem.(So infact all scores are correct.) The only problem is setting up the standards for what is good and what is not.

The first Lite On drive which is allready in the stores now is based on a SONY oem drive. SInce the info LIte On allready showed we can say that they where developping there own +/-R(W) burner if this will be continued I don't know. Best to ask the people from Lite On.

***UPDATE***
At this moment we now no that none of the Lite On drives come close to the audiodev equipement.
So there are 2 options left.
1 Calibrate and setup our own test and quality standards with a Lite On unit. This one is quite hard.
2 Don't use it.

By the way POF and PIF are actually more important but K-probe doesn't give them so far.

john -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (6/1/2003 12:00:37 AM)

We have ideas of making some tests but it needs much more in depth testing than what we thought at the first place, please be patient [:o)]

rjw -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (6/1/2003 4:20:51 PM)

I know about the problems and specially the time it takes to setup good tests for WSES/CD-Docter and Kprobe and the drives used to get good tests. And I know quite some people who are working on it. If anything turns out. I will let you guys know.

john -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (6/2/2003 2:13:32 AM)

I was pretty much was thinking of doing some comparison between the various LiteOn DVD readers with various media and see if there could be a corelation factor between them so we have a reference point for all measurements. No idea if this can be done or not, we have to found out ourselfes i guess [:I]

Anyway keep us informed about any possible solutions.

PS. Maybe the upcoming PX-704 DVD Dual recorder supports Q-Check functions for DVD media as the Premium does for CD media...? [;)][:D]

rjw -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (6/2/2003 2:11:21 PM)

Is that PX704 confirmed yet. I have seen the rumour everywere but nobody has actually hard proof for it. If it is there then I think it will be a NEC N-1300 OEM. Still Plextor could and should trow in some nice features since with the 504 the only seem to have added Plextools support. (It seems that there even was no optimalisation for media done.)
Now I know NEC did a fine job with the optimalisation for most media but still from Plextor you expect more.

john -> RE: PI/PO Errors, but which drive to use? (6/2/2003 4:25:47 PM)

> Is that PX704 confirmed yet

It should arrive one month after Plextor officialy announces it [;)]

> NEC N-1300 OEM

Hopefully not!

>but still from Plextor you expect more

Of course! Thats why we propose to add special functions (Q-Check) for DVD media as with CD media![:)]
