I just purchased a IOMAgic drive at Staples for $39.99 after rebate and in the box was a Benq 1620 drive.

In device manager it shows up as ATAPI DVD DD 2x16x4x16 firmware G7Z9

Is this a newer version of the Benq firmware and can this drive be flashed to make it a Benq drive?

After reading the messages here it appears the G7Z9 firmware is newer than anything listed in the forum.

Even though it appears to be newer than anything available anywhere else, if you check the date of the file in iomagic's G7Z9 firmware update and the date of the file in BenQ's G7P9 update, the G7P9 appears to be newer.

i think that you can convert the drive from OEM to retail, search around this forum to see how it can be done
