Possible, but not great - not yet certain if the drive isn't up to it (though it's reported that the SONY DRU-710A will have an OFFICIAL upgrade), or it's the typically poor state of early Liteon firmware.

Worse results noted, on +R media at the same speed as before - 1653S CS02 formware is definitely not up to the standard of 1633S BS0G/BS0H/BS0K

I'm sticking with BS41 for now, it's the best put out so far... Beautiful quality.

CS09 is now the current 1653S release
http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_firmware_dvd%20rw.asp

The apparent promotion of the 1653s to 1673S specification
SOHW-1653S ( 16x 8x / 16x 6x / 16x / 4x + 48x 24x 48x ) DVD Dual Firmware

- is generally reckoned to be a mistake

NB. Suitably crossflash fixed firmware from the usual places will be required if you ARE making unofficial upgrades

The burn results I have with the 1633 using BS41 firmware are much better than "any" scan I've seen on the NEC 3500.... it's not even close.

well so what's the major difference between the S0S and BS41 firmware's? Is it just media or are we talking burn speed?

BSOS is a 1633S specification firmware (16x CAV/P-CAV +R, 8x Zone-CLV -R, 2.4x +R9)

BS41 is a 1653S specification firmware for 1633S model drives (US market, where it seems they will not be launching the 1653S)
- brings the -R up to 12x P-CAV, and the +R9 up to 4x

Is BS41 better or worse than BS0S ?
- It depends on the drive ... some drive tolerances seem to fit better with 41, others with 0S - with a fully unlocked flasher, you can flash up and down - and the wrong drive too, so take even more care than usual if you are handling an unlocked flasher, or firmware BIN's and LTNFW.

My drive has been damaged because of the BS41 firmware so think twice before you install that one on a 1633S.
