I got an answer from Philips about my problems with CD-RW. The 1640 cannot burn CD-RW made for burning with 1-4speed, CD-RW high speed only! My CD-RW burner (NEC) has no problems with high or low speed at all.

Sorry m8, but their wrong about this. I burn MMORE cd-Rw's (80/700MB) at 4x in the PBDV1640B/00 and it is working just fine......

So, the firmware already exists, I can have it but cannot publish it. We have to wait for a while.

It adds 16X for the minus format and 4X for the DL...

Hate when they put an embargo on it......(is this correct english. I dont'really know).

welll w'll have to wait don't we.....

I hope so.
But- I care about quality, above all!!!
So, I can wait... and get a GOOD firmware!

By the way, I've just bought a brand new Philips 1620K Retail boxed.
Inside, it's labelled as DVDR1640, with firmware revision 2.2.
I'll put it in my PC tomorrow for a spin... hope it will work!!!

Thanks again for providing those new firmwares, Minos... I've bought this drive just because I can count on you!!! You should get a reward from Philips for this...

Don't worry, I know it.
I mean, hope I'll get a firmware with new capabilities (e.g. 4x DL burn, better media writing quality).

I always look for best writing quality.

As I said, outside, on the package it's labeled 1620K/00 .

On the casing, however, it's labeled DVDR1640.
I'll post a pic of it soon.

See you soon!

By the way, look at the "Shop forum". I've got lots of interesting prices on cds and DVD media...

Hi, as I promised, here there are the pics of my brand new "Philips 1620K/00" boxed dvd-writer...

As you can see, it bears the logo "1640" both on the front bezel anc on the upper side... but on the retail box it's labeled as "1620K/00" kit.

the boxed kit includes: 1 cd with Nero 6 OEM Suite (Nero burning rom 6 SE + Nero Vision Express 2), a paper 20% rebate for the DVD-Video plug-in, a printed multi-lingual quick installation guide, a printed 60-pages multi-lingual, detailed and illustrated "How to..." manual.

I still haven't installed the writer in my system... I'll do it on Wednesday. No time now....
