I used to have a NEC 2500A which had a hacked firmware to allow you to burn 4x dvd-r at 6x,
is there hacked firmware for the dvr-108 drive to do the same thing?

There are some hacked firmware's for Pioneer-108. Try a little search in this forum and you'll find one.

Yes there are, try NILs firmware over www.rpc1.org

I found a hacked Firmware from gradius(1.18 RPC-1 + unlock rip) .
He wrote on http://gradius.rpc1.org/ that the pioneer dvr-108 can burn DVD-RW @ 6x...
