want bitsetting for the LG 4160 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I emailed LG europe (UK) and they told me:

"Thank you for your kind email. Currently there isn't a firmware update available to support Booktype setting for this drive. If a firmware update becomes available it will be posted on our website: www.lgelectronics.co.uk Please check periodically for any new updates. UK Helpdesk"

I simply can't understand WHY the 4120 has it and the 4160 still doesn't.........

The 4160b was my first dvd burner and the reason i picked it was because it supported all three formats and i had a good experience with lg optical drives in the past, i have two 8520b cd burners and never gotten a coaster on those. Well, I was quiet dissapointed by the 4160b writing performance at 4X, i tried different media but still would get some coasters. Also i'm very dissapointed by the fact that lg didn't and hasn't done anything to support bisetting on this drive (one of my dvd players only plays dvd-r or dvd-rom). After having it for 2 weeks i ended up buying a NEC 3500a and i'm currently storing the 4160b in the drawer until there's a better firmware out for it. I've had great luck with the 3500a from NEC using the 2C8_SE firmware, havn't gotten a single coaster yet and the write quality is great even with some cheap 4X speed dvds. What I fail to understand is that why LG not releasing a bitsetting firmare for this drive? What's the big deal? They support bitsetting on the 4120b so it shouldn't be a big deal if they support the 4160b as well If LG keeps this up i probably won't buy another LG optical drive again.

but for 4163b there is a program for bitsetting
quote:

Bitsetting can only be done to the extent it is supported in the
firmware of a drive. Don't ask me "can you make bitsetting on +RW
work for LG drives?". Ask the LG technical support!

Description:

This software can perform bitsetting on the following drives:
LG GSA 4120B (firmware A104 or higher)
LG GSA 4163B
Plextor PX-712A (firmware 1.05 or higher)
Plextor PX-708A (firmware 1.08 or higher)
+ Plextor 708A - Clone: TDK 840G
Benq 1620A
...as well as all other drives using the same commands

LG GSA-4160B (firmware A302) is a mess.
See yourself here: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?p=139866#139866

Bitsetting capabilities:
------------------------
LG: DVD+R : DVD+R, DVD-ROM
DVD+R DL: DVD+R DL, DVD-ROM
DVD+RW : bitsetting not supported by firmware
note : at the moment, only the LG 4120B/4163B is capable of bitsetting

Plextor: DVD+R : DVD+R, DVD-ROM
DVD+R DL: DVD+R DL, DVD-ROM (not yet verified to work with this app)
DVD+RW : bitsetting not supported by firmware

Benq: DVD+R : DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-ROM
DVD+R DL: DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-ROM
DVD+RW : DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-ROM
note : setting DVD+ discs of whatever type to DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R DL is idiotic

As far as i'm concern, 4160B is rip off!

I can't find the post, but the picture with the specs of 4162B(at the time) was dated July 23rd.
And LG had no shame releasing 4160B in august who is a mild upgrade from 4120B.

A new drive should mean new hardware, and there is no difference between 4120B and 4160B.

I'm tired of seeing companys like LG and LiteON releasing new drives for every new generation of a more mature firmware.

I'm the happy owner of a 4120B. But when i will retired the drive for a new one, i will look elsewhere than LG for replacement.

Those who bought 4160B, should ask for a huge discount, or a free upgrade for 4163B. 4160B is useless!

My two cents!
