First the most important:

ABSOLUTETLY GREAT DRIVE!!!! Have a look at www.cdrlabs.com and compare it with the 24xPlex...

BTW, it can write 99 Minutes, not only 90!

Vino, I see your drive has the 1.02 firmware, did it come
with it or did you flash it. I've heard something about the 1.02 firmware being out, but I heard it was for the 12x drives.

Dear all,
I was a little bit sceptical about the 8160 but am now a convert.

I bought the LG in the UK at Pcworld for £79.00, I understand that LG
made two
Versions, the CED 8160 which would not do sd2(safedisc v2) and its
also made in china and the GCE Model that will. The GCE is made in
korea. Check the box, its written on the side.
I have tried to backup collin Macrae rally2, which on my previous CD
burner Mitsumi 4802 was not successful. With the GEC model I copied
the image on to the hard drive using the latest Clonecd and also
selecting the fast skip. I also set my fast skip to hardware rather
that software or none. I copied at max speed which was probably at 30
to 40X. to write to disc, I selected amplfy weak signal (nb change
your regioin settings on your pc to any country than uk and us if not
amplify signal would not work, you could also seach your registry for
amplify…set the value to 1). I wrote to disc at max speed and
amazingly my game worked perfectly.

My system is just an Abit (SS BH6) –CELERON 300 with 390 MB RAM
plus 2 hard drives and 1 dvd and the 8160 LG.

My LG 8160 is set as slave on my secondary IDE channel and the master
happens to be a old CREATIVE DVD ENCORE which only runs at 10 speed.

NB I also used clonyxl but it gave me the wrong info for copying
safedisc v2.

Please not that the above worked for me with no problems, but it may
not work for you.

Good luck

Did it only work when you selected "Amplify Weak Sectors"
If it doesn't work without that option it is not able to write regular bit paterns correctly (EFM). Its old news since most burners now do SD2 with AWS checked, but my Plex 24X doesn't need this checked to produce 'perfect' copies. Does yours

Also i'm pretty sure the game you tested for SD2 (Colin McRae Rally 2)
is protected using SecuRom 2. This makes your test story different now...
But correct me if i'm wrong

well the additonal utility called clonyxl showed it to me as being safedisc v2. if this is not the case then it goes to proof the utility is out of date..

but also note with collin macrae 2 its been repackaged and so its now in the cheaper section of most computer game shops.

2 versions of Collin Mcrae seem to exist. A safedisk 2 version and A securom new/2 version.

Is there any way to tell what copy protection (SD2 or Securom 2) is on McRae 2 before you buy

G'day Squizz,
I have one too & yes I can back-up SafeDisc2.
The only settings are,

Fast Error Skip: YES

Fast Error Skip Settings: 5, Hardware.

Write Mode: RAW DAO

I don't need to check the "Amplify Weak Sectors" box.

About Mcrae you can't see the difference as far as I know. But to be shure of securom new/2 just use Diablo II that one is allways Securom and seems for a lot of burners a pain in the ass. (Specially the LOD disc)

I have tried several times recording Diablo 2: LOD with my 8160b and no luck so far (secuROM 2). It looks like this writer won't read sub-channel data from data tracks, thus it is impossible to backup securom v2 titles. I still have to try reading with other sub-channel capable drive and burning with the 8160b, as it looks like it is capable of WRITING sub-channel data.

(if you are sceptical about this, check clone-cd web page with updated info on this drive:
http://www.elby.org/CloneCD/english/cdr_l.htm )
