Designations for media supported are not always sufficiently precise. It would be very helpful if Yamaha would include the ATIP data.

ATIP is not as reliable a you may think. Some manufacturers use the same ATIP as others. Some factories buy third party CD-R stampers (stompers?) and you can get some pretty confusing results! besides, the average user doesn't know what an ATIP is...including most support staff from the manufacturers [:I]

Yes this has been brought up in other foruns. One of the conclusions drawn was that the Lead-in Lead-out values were likely to be indicative of the product, but the manufacturer and dye values were fixed by the manufacturer of the stamper and could be bogus. ATIP is not what it could be but short of buying a factory sealed carton with a known part number, checking the ATIP and buying from a reputable source is a good idea. Nero makes it easy to read the ATIP.

As far as Yamaha is concerned, specifying supported media by both description and ATIP would help reduce misunderstanding. For example perhaps you know what supported media TY (YUDEN Type RVX40 40x) is. I don't. How many basic versions of 40x(or 48x) product does TY currently make? Knowing the ATIP would help narrow it down.

If you do this you can see ATIP information:
1. Put a blank disk in the drive. (This example uses a Fujifilm 48x, USA market).
2. In your Nero software group, select Nero Toolkit, then select the program CD Speed.
3. Once in "CD Speed" select the "Extra" pull down menu then click on "disk info"

You will see something like this:

This information comes from the so-called ATIP region of the disk. The two data fields thought to be at least somewhat reliable are the "Code:" and the "Capacity:". Taken together they are often used identify the disk version. In this case the pair 97m24s01f, 79:59.72 is found on Taiyo Yuden 40x and 48x CDR's in the USA market. Fuji is the OEM customer of Taiyo Yuden. There are lists that relate manufacturers and product versions to this data pair. For example in John's extensive review of the CRW-F1DX he presents an ID table like this for the media he used.
