You will need to get a binary firmware in order to test since the windows flashers will not work directly. It might be possible to modify them. maybe john would back up the firmware on the 52x BTC using mtkflash and send it to us.

No-no, everything is much simplier. There are two flashers on www.btcusa.com : one of them is for BCE 4816IM, the other is for 5224IM. Both flashers extract to temp directory, they extract 4 files - three of them are for flasher itself, and the 4-th is .hex file with firmware. Both flashers check the drive model, but allow to select a .bin or .hex file with firmware. So it is not a problem to start a flasher for BTC 4816 and choose a file with firmware for BTC 5224. The trouble is: when i decided to overclock my drive, i wanted to check flash programs first. So i started flasher for BTC 4816IM first, and tried to update it with firmware for this drive. I wanted not to overclock, but to update my BTC 4816IM with a new firmware for it. So i chose a 4816.hex file, and started flashing. Flasher reported "Erasing..." and then "Updating...". My computer started to lag, and a few seconds after the first rectangle appeared in a progress bar, it showed blue screen of death with some kind of "program stack error". After i pressed reset button the drive was totally dead - even the eject button didn't work. I have a WinXP SP1, and that was for the first time i saw a WinXP BSOD. So i didnt have a chance to overclock my BTC since it is dead. maybe CDRInfo staff will be more successfull - i am not sure, if it is a flasher-killer or my buggy WinXP

While we're on here, does anyone know which (if any) BTC drives can be OCed? I just bought a BTC 32x really cheap (hey you know, don't turn down a bargain eh? ), just wondering if it would go to 40x given it's a Mediatek and all that....

Is it a mediatek drive? Then, maybe it is possible to flash another company's firmware in it? - BTW there were firmware upgrades for BTC BCO drives also. Anyway, we should ask admin. And hope they try to overclock BTC drive when they have it, cause it seems that my dead drive will be repaired. [}:)]

Has anyone yet tested to flash the bce 4816im with the firmware for the 5224im?

Would be really interesting to know, cause i've seen the drive for 52 Euro in a shop next door. First i wanted to buy a used plextor 24/10/40 A, but after i saw on the clone-cd homepage that the bce 4816im has a perfect rating and the plextor not (not so good efm encoding), i decided myself for the cheaper new btc 4816im with waranty.
Or has anyone any reasons against the btc drive, except for the bad audio error correction. (sorry for my english)

Well, i like this drive. It doesn't support 5224 firmware. And maybe it's audio error correction is not so good. And AFAIK (not tested) it cannot rip Key2Audio, or some kind of audio protection. And, although, sometimes it detects writing speed incorrectly. But this drive can rip StarForce protected discs. I mean it can make a correct DPM analysis. And this drive is cheap.
BTW, i heard about BTC 48x/24x/48x. But i have niether seen any firmware for this drive, nor any reviews of it. Does anybody knows if this drive's firmware can be flashed to BTC 48x/16x/48x?
