There are two formats of DVDRs, the DVD-R and the DVD+R. If you want to support the DVD-R I suggest buying the Pioneer A04 or the A05, if you want to support the DVD+R I suggest buying the HP DVD200i. If you are unsure of what format you want to support, then I suggest the Sony DRU500A, which supports both DVD-R and DVD+R. The only Downside with the Sony DVD writer is it doesn't like many brands of recordable DVDRs (Even though it supports both formats!). So no matter what you buy you are taking a risk [xx(]. As for what media to use, it depends on what DVD Burner you choose, when you've decided on that, simply check out their recomended media list
Also, you can't make a 1:1 copy of a DVD movie, or at least most of them. The average DVD movie is on a Dual layered disc, which is 9.4GB and the DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs are both only 4.7GB, and there isn't much hope of a larger capacity DVD recordable coming out. Sorry!
