I used Verbatim 8X and was getting 8X writing speed with LG 12X firmware A102, so far ok i thought, but Nicw told me that A102 firmware can do 12X with Verbatim 8X, so i checked the media we had here, from Verbatim and MKM:

The MKM 8X can burned at 12X, while the Verbatim 8X (we used) only at 8X...

Looking at the media ID codes, under DVDInfoPro, both media look exactly the same, using the extended ID code we can see a difference RI for Verbatim, Bn for MKM...Maybe the RI Verbatim media will phased out soon by Bn MKM?

Can you please post the complete media ID code(s) from your Verbatim 8X media?

Check the BACK of the Jewel case (if you got in a jewel case)

There are 2 Types of Verbatim 8X +R out...

One made in Singapore (MCC 003 8X)

One made in Taiwan (MKM 8X - MCC003 that can burn at 12X)

This is from checks I made on media I have at the moment...

Anyone else verify this?

Well I have both types of the said media

Mitsubishi DVD+R (made by MKM, made in Singapore) - only burns at 8X

Verbatim Datalife Plus DVD+R 1-8X also made in Singapore - burns at 12X

The only reliable way is to check the media ID code, as pointed out my emperor.

This is the media is suspect is the crappiest as I have 3 of these DVD+R's burnt at 8X with the PX-712A (v1.03) that don't read faster than 1X (they play fine when you watch them) but on a backup (2X or faster) they don't read with any software and I can't copy them since all my drives don't have a slower than 2X DVD read speed option...

Or.. is anybody else's PX-712's not recording these?

I don't have Jewel cases for both media around, as soon we get some retail media will check this and report where are made, etc...

I can't give you right now the full media codes, as my unit is in the RMA process, but what I can do is to present few interesting things about them, until I get my unit back. I'll post then the full media ID codes.

All my 8x Verbatims are Singapore made, and identified as:

Verbatim DataLifePlus, AdvancedAZO, Printable, Jewel Cased, order code 43274, MCC003 Rev00

I've wrote 4 of these discs until now, sent one to Plextor.be, and have one more left.

Out of those four, my Plextor PX-712A reported 8x writing descriptors available on three of them. For the fourth disc however, my PX712A reported a 12x descriptor available! Very strange isn't it? All these discs carry the same order code and were purchased at the same time from the same retailer.

Now let's look at the serial numbers. There are two SN's on these discs, the first one is near to the hole and is unique, while the second one is close to the lead in area and is not unique:

First the "12x" disc:

VX4302LA013794, ZC8365-DVR-X47B

The "8x" discs:

VX4231LA076671, ZC7156-DVR-X47A
VX4201LA027571, ZC7156-DVR-X47A
VX4131LA076665, ZC7156-DVR-X47A

Notice something? Different ZC codes for the disc which wrote at 12x compared with those which wrote at 8x only. I would be interested to know what is that A or B at the end of the ZC code meaning. Coincidence? I don't think so! Now as I've just said, all this media carries the same order code!

I'll post the full media ID's as soon as I'll get my drive back.
