Ok the bottom line is then that if UR CDR is X32 and the media X16, Nero might suggest and allow writing at X32?

Come to think of it, Nero saves Ur last settings I think. So if U previously had a X24 in the X32 burner it will retain the X24 setting until U manually change it.

Is that not so?

Nero has nothing to do with detecting the media's fastest speed.... The Lite-On's (in this case) SMART-BURN checks the highest speed the media supports and sends the results to Nero and it lists only the highest speed the media can handle.

@Stone:

If you were to write at 32X with that media, it would have a high level of C1 errors and maybe even C2 errors which would make the disc unreadable.

If you really want to, un-check SMART-BURN in the 'choose recorder' window, and it will write full speed to any media, but risking write quality and errors of course.

Download "SMART-BURN Media Checker" from www.liteonit.com and that will show you the highest speed for that media.

Remember: Sometimes a CD-R/RW can be labeled "32X compatible" or "40X compatible" and still not able to write at that speed. The newest firmware can help as this adds more media compatibility...

Hope you understand in full now .

Hi Clint - and everyone else!

I have a Digital Research 48x16x48 Internal CD-RW Drive — DR-CDRW481648. I know, shame on me for buying such a generic, no name, high speed drive... but it was $99 w/ $10 MIR at Best Buy and I sold my 24X for $50 ... so not too bad for an upgrade!

Anwyay - this was my introduction to Smart Burn and al lthe headaches associatesd therewith! Previously, I had burned 16X ACER media in my 24X drive w/o any problems at all --- over 100 discs!

But now my stupid drive won't let me burn over 16x on these discs! I did have some Verbatin 32X (actually Mitubisha Chemical;2 - thanks to whoever posted the easteregg about SHIFT-refresh on the media info screen!) that Nero sez I can burn at 40X (doesn't work tho... sometimes doesn't work at 32X either - but that's another story).

Clint --- you said "If you really want to, un-check SMART-BURN in the 'choose recorder' window, and it will write full speed to any media, but risking write quality and errors of course.". I have Nero 5.5.9.0 and the 'choose recorder' window doesn't have this checkbox... did they dump it in this version, or is it somewhere else now?

I'd really like to burn the rest of my 16X media at 24X (or whatever I can) since I did it on my 24x burner w/o any problems....

Last question --- I have an Athalon1400 w/ 1G RAM and a RAID0 (3ea 10k rpm 18G SCSI UltraWide drives) that I burn from --- if I actually spend a little extra and get 48X media, am I likely to be able to burn at 48X? Or only likely w/ a Plextor drive or some big bux good drive?

Thanks, all!

-- oh, WinXP Pro on above system... and it seems that in the 'choose recorder' dialog it lists the max drive speed for each media type I insert... I've also turned off the 'Desktop CD Recording' under the drive properties in XP...

First off this only works for Lite-On/Yamaha (late models) based drives (I think!??).

If yours is one of 'em, in choose recorder there will be an "Options" button, then you take the the tick out of SMART-BURN, OWSC.

It's still avaliable in Nero 5.5.9.0

Digital research don't make there own drives, so its possible that it is a rebaged Lite-On or Benq (Acer) or other...

Yes bottom line, invest in some better high speed certified CD-R/RW's. Then it will write faster. Make sure DMA is enabled in device manager.

A Plextor drive would write that media at 16X too, probably. They are pretty picky.

Maybe the drive is based upon BenQ drive?

I am 100% that Nero save previous burn speed settings.

Previously burned X16 Cd @ X8

During later session there was X32 Cd in the drive and Nero had still X8 selected as the burn speed.

The point is, if you don't manually select the burn speed, you might burn a coaster if the Media in the burner has a lower burn rating than that was previously selected.

Or is there an option in Nero where it will automatically select the maximum speed of the media in the burner?

Nwke, I think it's your drive:

As I just read your post, I tried your theory. I inserted a 16X CDR into the drive with Nero, (Nero default recording speed was 16X) Then I put a 10X CDR into the drive (Nero default recording speed was 10X). I then put a 24X CDR into the drive (Nero default recording speed was 24X. Maybe a media problem instead of drive.

Thanx MP3Mogul,
My CDR is a AOpen 32x10x40
My OS is W2K Sp3
Nero 5590 bundle upgraded

Found for example with W2K that Nero Multi-Mounter doesn't work either.

Will not be surprised if this Non default Burn speed selection might be a W2K issue also.
