For now I see no big differences between GH4S and GH4W, but I let you know.
The only thing I can tell for now is that the R1211 regionpatch also works with the new firmware.

I see that the upgrade should be performed in DOS. I have win2000 installed and NTFS disks, how do I upgrade my drive?

Which Firmware is best and where can I find a patch that unlocks the region protection on this drive?

to do the upgrade in nt/2000/xp with nt file system do this :

go in my computer and right click the floppy drive and pick format and make a windows boot disk . when its done remove that disk and put in another floppy and copy the unzipped .exe firmware file to this disk. Remove that disk. Reboot your system and immediately put in the windows/dos boot disk . Then when it boots to the dos prompt remove that disk and put in the firmware disk and run the firmware exe file .

To make the drive regionfree go to: http://perso.club-internet.fr/farzeno/firmware/ click on DVD and search for Liteon. The patch works for firmware GH4F, GH4S and GH4W.

To tell you the truth, not much.
If you don't have specific issues you don't really have to upgrade.
I used to have GV3Y and the difference is very small with some performance going a little bit down with the new f/w!

What they mainly fixing is compatibility things like with 99min cd's, different Windows, software dvd-players. There was also an unannounced reduction of the speed the tray is closing!

Hi

How do I know that I have DMA enabled under win2000, can't find any setting for this in device manager for my LTD 163. How do I activate DMA?

I made a test in Nero CD Speed and I got constant x16 speed when performing a transfer test of an audio CD. A bit low, right?

I have firmware VGH4S and my drive is connected as slave on IDE1 (my HD is master).

Another strange thing, first I could only play Audio CD:s in Windows Media Player. I could not get any sound when trying to play the disc from Winamp or Audiograbber but when I enabled Digital CD sound for the drive it works (I have connected the analog cable to my SB Live!).

Greetings

Baxman

Because a lot of people don't know which firmware to choose, or are afraid to upgrade, I have done a little testing between firmware GH4N, GH4S and GH4W.

Data test in Nero CD speed: no big differences.

DAE test in Nero CD speed: no big differences.

DVD test in Nero DVD speed: no big differences.

GH4N readtime of a 71:21 min. audiocd in EAC, secure mode: 3:52 min.
GH4S readtime: 4:00 min.
GH4W readtime: 3:43 min.

GH4N readtime of Grandprix 3, copy protection SD1 in Clonecd 3.1.1.0, FES on: 8:55 min.
GH4S readtime: 8:27 min.
GH4W readtime: 8:11 min.

GH4N cannot made regionfree.
GH4S can made regionfree.
GH4W can made regionfree.

So there are some differences but not big, make your choice.
