I can't seem to install the pioneer firmware. It keeps saying target not found.

there is firmware for DVR-109 and a09. Do you have the correct?

yes select correctly your drive ID and you can update the firmware

Some OEM models will not update to the "vanilla" DVR-109 either, without forcing the issue using DVRupdate (V0.9) - the lamentable slowness of OEM releases, such as the Medion the lags back at 1.17, would not be such a problem if the drive was not in grave need of media support updates.
