I've been trying to find an AOpen AAP 1648 drive, but am not sure what I'm looking at in the online stores. I've read about suffixes like FW and Pro, etc.

What is the one Egghead sells? http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-579&depa=0

Does anyone know if AOpen's OEM drives accept their factory firmware? I know from experience that ASUS drives do not.

i don't think you should have any problem, if they are recognized as 1648 AAP/Pro, you should be able to flash it

The one you linked to looks like the non-Pro. There are very slight differences in the error correction that appear to make the Pro just slightly slower, but both drive are rip speed demons with factory firmware; I have the non-Pro. Be very careful to identify which one you have as the firmware is different. Many dealers list the older and send the newer.

I don't know. I did a search on the part number NewEgg lists (91.4ED37.404) for this drive and came up with this on the AOpen site under the DVD1648/AAP PRO description:
