Hi everyone and, before anything else, CONGRATULATIONS upon the VERY good job you´re all doing in this forums...

I have to say, just in case, that I have searched up and about in the forum search function but I found no results to my Q.

I am the proud owner of an Acer 4002WLMi, that I have only lately started using for dvd burning and backing up. To my surpraise, my first tests where made on Imation DVD+RW discs, which had NO problems whatsoever (Media Code is RICOHJPNW01) but then... chaos came home....... I tried to burn on DVD+R (two brands up to now) and no luck in burning. <<<speed did not go higher then 2.4, and the busning process stopped just after trying to write the TOC.

I eventually found out (thnxs to this forum ), that the Media Code for those DVD+R where not suitable for (almost) anything but coasters... (MEDIA ID001 and POMSA001 0R). So my next step is to get suitable (decent) recording media to test some more things to see if my recorder is a goner and have to go back to the shop or what...

But in the mean time, and here comes the Q, is there an upgrade/update for my burner?? The firmware it holds now is PRS9.

Also, with DVDInfo, the drive shows as capable of reading/witing on DL dvd´s, but it was not sold to me like that.... but just as a single layer DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD-R... where is the truth of it all??

Well, Ii think this is rather enough for tonite, and my apologies to all that will read this post, for it´s length... but I thought the more info, the better.

Cheers and thnxs in advance for your help,

Willy

Welcome!

Acer 4002WLMi is a notebook, am I correct? and the system recognises you burner as SOSW-852S, does it?

Although your internal burner is different than the external, there is a review about the Liteon SOSW-852SX External below. This explains more about the speeds:

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=12235

It seems that no 8X supported, while there is a media list from LiteOn.

So, as I understand from what you say and by reading this article, is that PSX1 firmware would be suitable for me? I´ll give it a go... now searching on how to do a firmware upgrade comes along...

Again, thnxs for your help, and any further comments or recommendations ar welcome.

Willy

No, sorry, I didn't mean that.

I just give it to you to see that no 8X is supported and the writing quality is rather low, in other words speed is a common problem for this burner. I apologize if I didn't express myself correctly.

No probs Iggy, My bad for misunderstanding you... Anyway, I have put PSX1 on my burner right now, and I´ve been able to burn on the media I specified on my first post, something I could´nt do with PRS9. What I´ll do in the next days, is go back to PRS9 try again and go back to PSX1 and so on to do a few tests...

If there´s something you´d recommend me to do also, let me know.

Thnxs again!!

Willy

I wish LiteOn to release a new firmware soon. I don't want to disappoint you but it seems that the drive is not so good. The only way this to be fixed is probably with a new firmware.
