At this thread you can find information about the released un-official firmware for NEC 3500A and related OEM drives.

A) The Basic Stuff

Q: Whats the purpose of those un-official firmware?
A: The main idea behind the un-official firmware is to offer additional "improvements" in terms of:

* RPC1: Region Free Drive
* Riplock: Removes 6X limit when ripping CSS DVD-Video discs
* ID: Change the ID of an official released firmware
* Media hacks: Change (usually increase) the writing speeds for specific DVD+/-R media

Q: I like the main idea, but why NEC doesn't offer the above features from box?
A: NEC as a member of the DVD-Forum must include RPC2 region protection for all DVD recorders. The Riplock is an additional measurement to prevent ripping that many companies have adopted, of course there is the official excuse that prevents noise/vibration when playback DVD-Video discs.

Q: Is it safe to use the un-official firmware?
A: Yes, you can go back to your original firmware anytime with the "correct" flasher.

Q: I see at many firmware the SE letters, what this mean?
A: Usually used to state the differences from the official firmware (SE=Special Edition)

Emperor,
What is the difference between the SE version 2.27 and the 2.17 right below it?
Also, what is the SE version and the renamed firmware version 1616n ?? If I have NEC 3500A i bought from newegg.com that is used externally via USB 2.0 port for my laptop, which version of the firmware about should I use to upgrade it to to remove the Riplock? thanks.

2.27 and 2.17 are different versions, the 2.27 supports bitsetting for DVD+R/+R9 , while 2.17 only for DVD+R9.

The SE version of TDK removes RPC1/Riplock and supports 4X writing for Ritek DL...

To add this, none of the current NEC/TDK firmware seems to support DVD-ROM booktype setting for DVD+RW media...

Thanks for clearing up some of my confusions. I'm new at this and it seems there are so much info.
Couple questions, since I have the NEC-3500AG, in your opinion, is it best for me to get the SE 2.17 or to get the SE version of TDK?

the SE version of TDK has newer writing strategies from 2.17SE so i guess you could test either of them

I,m newbie owner of Nec 3500a. This is the first DVD burner I own. I play with it for 3 weeks and back up about 25 movies. 1 bad out of 25. It's OK because I didn't use the good media (Fry's brand). After I surfing this forum for a week I finally join last night. I learn a lot from this forum but still have some questions.
1. I'm think of update to the newest unoffical firmware to increase my riping speed, rpc1 and booktype setting to dvd-rom of sl dvd-r media. How you guys compare between the renamed 2c8 and herrie 2.17. I understand the 2c8se is the newest from tdk. It gets a lot of good words on it. But in some other forum has a issue of lead-in and out take a lot longer and some bitsetting problem. I read the Cdfreaks forum lot of people like the Herrie's 2.17se because it's very stable. What you guys feel about that.
2. How safe is to flash the firmware few times with the window flasher. I heard some people from the cdfreak forum kill their drive after a few times.
Thank you in advance!
