What a cool forum you guys have here! Of all the ones I subscribe to - this is by far the best.

Anyway here's the problem:

I just transferred a home movie shot on my Sony TRV-19 MiniDV to my harddrive. Some call this video capture (I guess). I connected the trv-19 via FIREWIRE to a PCI card I just installed. I used Nero to do the transfer. 58 minutes total video transferred.

There was some "dropped" information (I forget the term it used). Anyway - it looks like it plays ok - but I didn't watch the whole 58 minutes. I went into Nero VISION EXPRESS 2 and tried to burn the DVD. 4 times I get an error saying "Burn Process failed at 8x".

1. Why is this failing to write the DVD.
2. Why does it take 2 hours to burn at 8x (it seems to be burning at 2x) and I'm using 8x dvd's and my burner can go as high as 16x
3. Would the "dropped info" cause this problem

Nero Help Support (which takes forever to respond to emails) says the Video Capture must be bad and maybe I have an incompatible video capture card. (I'm not using a video capture card - just a PCI Firewire card)

Can anyone help me? What capture software can I use. Some mention success on Windows Movie Maker. Can you guys give me some software Ideas that I should be using for capture - that will work with Nero Vision Express? (I just upgraded to version 3 - but haven't tried the burn yet until I figure out the problem).

Thanks for any help-

-brian

probably Nero Vision Express 3 would decrease the encoding time and improve quality...I would try to update your DVD recorder's firmware and use other media or burn at lower recording speeds. The high time, is probably, the encoding time+burning time

dvd burner already has the latest firmware upgrade.

I tried something new yesterday... I turned off ALL running background applications (ie- anti-virus, internet connections, network connections) and ran the pc bare....

Then I transferred the MiniDV data to the computer via firewire. Procedded to build a movie with Nero Vision Express 3 and when it got to the burn/encode process.... it made it all the way to the LAST 5 seconds.

----and FAILED when it was (finalizing? i think is the term)- anyway - it fully burned but didn't complete the last llittle bit of info it puts on there to run on dvd players.

So, I'm getting closer to having a successful burn- can anyone explain this problem?

CBrian,

I Use Ulead Studio 8 for this purpose, and then DVD Santa to burn to DVD. There are some major bugs being found in the latest release of Nero... I'm seeing them all over the internet.

There are indeed some bugs in the most recent release of NVE30118, especially if you have the 'Burn-At-Once' option enabled in the final burn window. This will cause a 100% failure every time.

I would suggest if you are going to use Nero Vision, you should use teh NVE30114, or wait till we release a new version of NVE3, which should be sometime around Jan23rd.

And you should first write the output to your Hard Drive as a Video_TS folder, this way you can confirm the output is solid before going to the step of burning to DVD.

Regards

Craig

Thanks - that helps. Great idea.

So how do I revert back to the previous version? Just download and install off the web-site? I'm wondering if I'll get the error" Latest version installed"

IT WORKED! I'm so excited.

I did exactly what you reccomended. I downgraded to the previous version, burned WITHOUT disc-at-once - and after 1 hour and 51 minutes - my first 40minute home movie was complete! My only complaint is that it burned as ONE TRACK. I thought Nero inserted track breaks at each "clip" (when I hit start/stop on the DV camera). Maybe I have to go in and have Nero auto-edit the whole track.

But the good news was I didn't have to burn to the hard drive first.

My next question is....

How can I speed up the whole burn process? My Sony DVD burner can reach speeds of 16x. When I "backup" my dvd collection with Shrink - I can do a full 2 hr movie in less than 20 minutes. Why is the home movies taking so long?

Is there a way to burn home movies using Shrink? I would think it's the same process.

I may have found an answer to my speed up encoding questinon.....

In neroexpress - there is a box I can check: "enable smart encoding for video and audio material" saying - when the box is selected, video and audio material that is compliant with the destination format will NOT be re-encoded." So far - I've left this box blank.... would there be any recourse for checking this box? Would anyone reccomended it?

Secondly, I have the option of changing encoding mode to: High-Quality (2 pass VBR) or FAST-ENCODING (1 pass VBR) Currently I have had High-Quality 2 pass selected. If I changed this - would I loose any quality - and would it speed up the encoding process?

My LAST question is: How can I go back into Nero and manually insert "breaks" for tracks. Like I previously posted - the originall burn was ONE track. What is the term Nero uses for "tracks".... is it CHAPTERS? If so- what should the auto-chapter settings be: Low or High and how many seconds Min/Max. I was hoping for a few minutes in between. - but ultimately - I would like it to recognize when the camera starts/stops the recording.

Best software for that is UleadStudio 8 or CyberLink PowerProducer 2.5 or 3.0.
It's very simply to use and you get better quality than NERO VisonExpress.
I made hundred DVD's with PowerProducer 2.5.

You can also with PP 2.5 burn right to disc (Ulead too).
