Hey everyone, I'm new here but I've been reading these posts for a few days now. I am going to purchase either the LiteOn SOHW1213s or the SOHW812s. Besides the speed, are there any advantages to either that I should know about? I also heard that the 812s can be flashed to be compatable with dual layer discs. Is the same true for the 1213? Is it difficult to do and is it even worth doing? I have been checking out the links for the firmware updates through this thread. What are the advantages of these updates? Thanks for all of your help

the mod for the 812 to 832 is for dual layer support.
the mod for the 1213 to 1633 is for dual layer support and 16x write speeds I think.

I like the LiteOn because of the price and also I know a few people that have LiteOn and have not had problems with it. I also used to own a LiteOn CDRW and it worked great.

Irrelevant: did you search for this name???

On our subject: I don't want to change your opinion but my experience tells me that there are much better drives than LiteOn. LG 4120 cannot be compared to the 1213, believe me. Haven't you read reviews about those drives?

i'd avoid the liteon dvd writers for now. I've owned many a liteon cd-rw and loved em all. Recently i bought 832 and have had write quality problems with decent quality media (branded ridata dvd+r 8x and dvd-r 4x). I changed to a nec 3500 and the write quality is far far better.

I'll still use liteon for dvd readers or cd-rw's, but not for dvd burning.

I'll secont that. DVD-ROMs and CD-RW used to be good. Even previous model, but the latest are not too good, if not something else.
