Below are several scans from the same disc, using different reading speeds. The CATS scan is also posted for reference...

- Reference Scan

- PlexTools Scans

What's interesting? That at 8X the drive managed to finish the test...however after re-reading the disc...

After re-read the disc at 8X, we saw the drive stopped not at the same position as before...

At the 2X/5X/12X all the times the drive stopped at the exact same disc position reporting un-recoverable read error. One time at 8X finished the test, other time didn't.

The error trend line at all scans seem to be the same.

Very interesting graphs, thanks!

Can you tell us how did you manage to scan at various speeds?

I though the scanning was limited to 2xCLV and could not be changed?

It's interesting to note that some discs that remain readable at 2xCLV become unreadable at 12xCAV, again showing that we really are in uncharted territory with higher rotational speeds (CAV mode). The quality just isn't there yet, to even read accurately at 12xCAV, not to mention write at 12xCAV.

Also, do you think that on this test:

http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=68880

the rising and then rapidly falling PIE rates (saw-like graph) are a sign of rising linear velocity until some tolerance figure is reached and after which the drive throttles down to much lower read velocity and start speeding it up again?

If so, it's a kind of a "almost 12xCAV most of the time, at least until speed needs to be downshifted" test mode.

Or is the rising of the linear read velocity non-linear?

cheers,
halcyon

Halc, the used version is a private one, only for evaluation...

I have the feeling that either Plextools or Sanyo chipset cannot accuratatly measure (sum) the reported errors sometimes, probably thats why you see the high->down->high spikes, i think we should also post the cdspeed transfer tests to complete the image

Below are the CDSpeed graphs from the various reading speeds, 12X/8X/5X

Thanks!

To make sure I understood: are those transfer graphs for the discs I linked to?

If so, it's quite weird that the transfer traphs are almost linear (very minor dips).

I wonder what is causing this saw like motion in the reported PIE rates? It could
really be a chipset "feature" or then the Plextools Pro PiSum Quality check is
using the drive in a different mode (and controlling speed differently) from CD DVD Speed (?).
