I recently attempted to remove a program from XP via the usual Control Panel/Remove etc. I get the message that only the administrator is allowed to perform this action. Its a stand alone PC and I'm in there as administrator and yes logged in. Am I missing some obvious procedure. Any clues gratefully received.

You might have to disable simple file sharing, at least thats what I think it's called. I couldn't get my copy of the latest Backup Exec for XP tp install kept saying I needed to create a administrative account and when I did all that it still would refuse to install. I changed that setting according to a FAQ on their site and it installed fine after that.
You might also want to try going into safe mode and see if it will work then.
It's under tools/folder options/veiw.
uncheck use simple file sharing and see if it helps your problem. It will alow you to install that backup program anyways if you get a copy someday :) This is in XP pro so yours might be different.

Its Norton Firewall, I've had a lot of strange behaviour with XP and have come to the conclusion that the latter is the cause. Its XP pro by the way.

Hi Manstein
This is a known Issue with Norton Firewall and with Norton Antivirus ! When you uninstalled it I would like to bet that when it asked you if you wanted to uninstall all files and Even when some of them were in Windows/System Folder you just clicked Yes without knowing what files they were. The best way to get round this is to re-install Firewall and then re-boot and then uninstall it from it's own uninstall program and any files that are in Windows/System say no when it asks you if you want to uninstall them. And then if you still have the same problem RE-install Windows XP over the existing Windows and that should cure the problem you are having !!!

i had the same problem with the same program just this week. you may have to boot into safe mode and then use the uninstall program. depends on exactly what you did when you first attempted to uninstall it. add/remove programs in the control panel just won't do the trick. avoid norton software like the plague anyway. they take over everything and hog all of your system resources.

Thanks for your assistance I've had problems with XP recently and after a couple of red herrings Norton firewall was looking like the guilty party. Norton Anti virus was never any trouble but as soon as the firewall was installed the OS immediately became unstable. I haven't much installed on the OS so I think I'll go for a complete fresh install of XP so as to clear the ground rather than patch it up. Once again thanks for your insights.

good idea, manstein. before you install norton antivirus after the reinstall see if you can get fsecure antivirus. you will be amazed at how well it does while not taking up all of your system resources like nav does. it is probably the worst norton software in that respect.

And as he says it does not take up the resources like Norton Antivirus does !!!

Thanks both I'll have a look at the suggested FSecure prog. I've just run a couple of IBM utils on my hard drives and one had a bad sector so perhaps its new hard drive time too !
