I followed Markk's step-by-step instructions (thanks for taking the time to write this up) for flashing the 1632 to 2040, but I tried to upgrade my AOPEN 1632 to 2440. The upgrade went OK (no errors, that is) and after a reboot, my system BIOS seemed to identify the drive correctly as a CRW2440. The problem is that Windows XP wouldn't read/write anything I put in the drive. The light would come on, and it would spin up, then down, then it would freeze up. After a few reboots and a little tinkering, I gave up. I then flashed it with the 2040 firmware, and it is working great.

I was really hoping I could jump to a 24X, but 20X will have to do. In any case, it's the cheapest upgrade I've ever done!!!! Free!!!

I wonder if another OS might make a difference?? Probably not.

he scoobinator. Did you upgrade the firmware to the new 2040 OC firmware version 1.01 (where the drive is identified as aopen2040) or are u using the generic firmware (v1.00) (where the drive is identified as just a 20X10X40 crw drive)? Because I OC'ed my friend's aopen crw 1632 and then tried to update to this new OC firmware I got here at cdr-info, but it didn't work! It gave an NG ** NG ** NG ** error or something. Help?
