People,

What's the difference between CD-R & CD-R Audio.

I go to Staples or CompUSA to purchase CD-R's to burn audio; & some salespeople tell you there's no difference between the two...whereas others tell you CD-R Audio is the only way to go (of course, no one can tell you exactly why.)

What's the scoop?

CD-R audio have some differences in the inner parts of a disc (PCA, etc), which is note accessible from the normal players. This difference acts as a permission ID for consumer recorders to allow using these discs.

All is about intellectual property rights, as CD-R discs cost more for compensation (presumably) to recording industry money being lost due to disc copies.

If your recorder can use plain CD-R, then use them instead.

A home audio CD-R recorder, normally demands CD-R Audio media, which is coded to indicate that a levy has been charged for the expected music copying use.

CD-R Audio media is usually more expensive (making it a poor choice if not essential), but might be more suitable for older, slower recorders (since the direct audio recorders it's intended for will be working at 1x speed)

With all current PC CD-RW drives, the price and possible low-speed tuning make it a very poor choice.

You can burn an Audio CD on standard media in a PC drive, and while the old 1x/2x advice no longer holds, it helps if you know the OPTIMUM speed of your drive/media combination - for most media, a couple of clicks down from maximum speed, possibly less.
