Use the free LAME MP3 encoder. It is the best MP3 compressor on the planet (in combination with appropriate software), and with bit rates in h/q of 128kb/s - you get CD quality sound, and fairly good space utilization. Around 50-80MB per CD, meaning you could squeeze at least 3 full CD's of high-quality CD music onto your 256MB player. Any higher bitrates of .mp3 is overkill (unless you use a different MP3 codec, which isn't of the output quality as LAME), and takes up more space for the same sound. Audiophiles claim at least 192kb/s, however my testing with the recommended LAME compile proves to me 128kb/s will suffice if set up correctly.
