I have a Memorex DVDUR/RW 8412AJ which, according to Nero Info Tools, is using the HWS4 firmware. It seems to write to -R media only at 1x even though the media supports 8x. Can I just download the HWS7 firmware from The Firmware Page and run the executable HWS7.EXE with Windows XP running? All I'm trying to do is upgrade the firmware and HWS7 seems to be the most recent.

Correct. Just download and run the .exe file. Make sure your tray is closed without any media inserted while avoid making anything else while flashing. After the upgrade process you'll be asked to restart your PC. Tha's all, but even if you don't get such message it would be better to reboot.

Thanks, Iggy. I did the download, ran the executable, and rebooted. It came back up saying that the DVDUR/RW 8412AJ was running firmware version HWS7. Nero Info Tools now indicates that it will write at 2x to the -R media that I have (which is Memorex-R 8x). At least it increased the write speed with the new firmaware. I would think I could get 4x with this drive, though.
