Is there a non-ufficial firmware that makes me able to write 4x certified DvD at a faster write speed?
I hope so, cause with the pioneer 108D it's possible...

Check here. Use A111 which also has the bitsetting feature. As for overspeed, this is not something that LG is famous for.

LG doesn't support overspeed, with 4X ->8X media..

Bitsetting feature is the option that you have to burn a DVD+R/RW media in a way that it will be recognized as DVD-ROM, resulting higher compatibility.

most time yes with LG drives, there are some media, mostly 8X rated that can burned up to 12X, however, check our review

I am a tad confused.
I've just recently got an LG 4120B as payment for a small IT job I did. In the manual, it states DVD-R burn upto 8X and DVD+R burn upto 12X.

However, when I check it with Nero, it states that it can only burn upto 4X regardless of the media inserted (TraxData 8X)
It does write DVD's / CDs ok but I don't understand why it reports a lower burn speed.
I have the latest firmware (A111) - Is this a problem with my media or my burner?
BTW - this occurs in both W98SE and W2K

The drive is reported by Nero as..
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4120B so it is at least seeing it correctly in terms of its ID.

Any ideas?

I just got one Lg too but I didnt used 8x media.

Hi and welcome to our forums, the problem here is the used media, how about trying Verbatim branded media and you will receive 8X -R and 12X +R writing speeds

Ahh, I must admit, I was wondering if it might be that as well based on a throw-away comment someone made to me.

On an aside note, what specifically is the difference between -R and +R media? is it just a different spec or is one superior in terms of longevity / quality to the other. Indeed, is there a place I can find out info on what sort of expected lifespan DVD's have and if they last longer that CDRs ?

+/-R media have several differences, the -R format is more compatible with older DVD players, the +R format with DVD-ROM booktype will have almost the same compatibility, about longetivity..that's another story

Longivity has to do with quality of the media itself, not only the recording, and this is a difficult chapter.
