I thought I'd share results of my little Mitsui CDR quick test. Let me start out by admitting that I am not a serious and/or experienced hardware tester by any stretch of the imagination.

Using my Plextor 12/10/32A I burned Offc XP (at 8X) to one of my new Mitsui Silver 80Min 24X CDR’s which I ordered from www.cdrplanet.com. I have an old P2 300MHz running Win2k Pro. My system also consists of a Kenwood 72x CD drive which, granted, is not a typical (non-burning) CD Drive. Kenwoods have unique positives and negatives with which many here are probably familiar.

I completed Nero CD Speed tests with an older Taiyo Yuden 12X copy of Offc XP, which was burned with the same PC setup, and the new Mitsui copy on each of my CD drives.

**The Plextor 12/10/32 reads both CDR’s pretty much equally.

Here are Mitsui-Plex results. Avg. Transfer Speed: 22.86X. Random Seek Time: 149ms. CPU usage: 2,3,6,67% at 1,2,4,8X.

And here are TY-Plex results. Avg. Transfer Speed: 22.26X. Random Seek Time: 131ms. CPU usage: 1,3,6,13%.

The 8X CPU test was won by TY CD by quite a bit—perhaps due to something running in the background? I didn’t bother closing AntiVirus and such or rerunning the Mitsui-Plex test like I probably should have.

**With the Mitsui CDR, Kenwood-72 scores were quite similar to the Mitsui-Plextor ones, but the Kenwood had faster seek times.

Here are Mitsui-Kenwood results. Avg. TS: 23.55X. RST: 102ms. CPU usage: 2,4,7,16%.

**The TY-Kenwood test is where things get interesting.

Here are TY-Kenwood results. Avg. TS: 7.46X. RST: 278ms. CPU usage 4,8,11,92%.

The scores are basically less than HALF as good as the Kenwood-Mitsui scores across the board! This makes me believe that the advertised higher reflective properties of the Mitsui are indeed much appreciated by the Kenwood. Many other non-burning CD Drives, I am guessing, may appreciate them as well.

[At this point I figured I’d let the Kenwood do a little showing off. I grabbed my handy stamped copy of Offc 97 Small Business and ran another test with each drive. The Plextor results are consistent with the previous Plextor tests. Avg. TS: 22.69X. RST: 139ms. CPU usage: 1,3,6,13%. Stamped data CD’s are the Kenwood’s bread and butter, however. The TS results are literally off the chart. Avg. TS: 50.14X. RST: 97ms. CPU usage: 2,3,6,13%.]

I have my 6 screenshots zipped to a 350K file. In case anyone is curious enough and doesn’t mind listing his e-mail address here, list it, and I will send the file.

Fyi, www.mitsuicdrstore.com has more info about Mitsui CDR’s.

Am I perhaps a bit off base with my deductions about Mitsui CDR’s? Do you have any results you’d like to contribute?

Thanks.
