In several cases, whether trying to read asf or wmv files with Media Player Classic 6490, I get the message “The following pin(s) failed to find a connectable filter : ACM Wrapper ::Output “. Image is available but not sound.  I loaded the latest k-lite codec pack, but there was no improvement.   I have no problem getting image and sound through VLC Media Player.

Try GOM Player.... It works great for the few files I've needed to playback that failed for some reason in Windows Media Player or something else....

Thanks for the tip. GomPlayer works fine but I would have liked to find out why Media Player Classic could not play sound all of a sudden.

It is likely that the video was produced with a codec WMP is not compatible with.
