After getting the out of disk space error on my 120G drive, which I should have 70 gig left on, I have dumped everything I could dump and still says I only have 1 gig left. I am running Norton Systemworks and in the past I learned that protected files were eating up my hard drive space. That is not the case now, as there are no protected files shown in the recycle bin. But, somewhere I saw files of the size of DVDs such as unrecycle/00001084.ISO. How do I regain my hard drive space?

Griz - check the obvious... clear the cache of your web browser... delete all files from your temp folders (%TEMP% and %WINDIR%\TEMP). If you do a lot of disc burning, delete the old images (iso, nrg, bin/cue). Check your disk for viruses or ads... do a scandisc and defrag. It's not that hard. If you can't do that, buy dinner for one of your guru friends and have them take a look.

Unfort, I have done all that. This computer is not on the web and has no excess software. That is why I am so perplexed. Need more input.

System Restore will be taking up the excess space and the only way to remove the restore files is to disable System Restore. You can re-enable it and then start the restore from the current time.

... assuming he is using XP... We need more info too. How is the disc formatted (FAT16/32, NTFS, HPFS -- old nt or os/2)? What do you have on the system and what is it used for? How big is the page file set to? Was the install of the os an upgrade or fresh install? If upgraded, old os files could still exist. Did you re-install the OS, do you have multiple Windows directories? Did you dable with Linux; do you have any ext2 partitions? How is your disc partitioned?

Also what % of your disc is allocated for the recyle bin...
