Yes Z-CLV has problems with some drives. At 12X there are more since the last zone most times suffers from increased errorl evels.

This problem is likely to be even more pronounced on 16x burners, at least for a while, until the various companies release updated firmwares to correct the problems, or maybe release new models of burners to overcome it.

These 'problems' will not be somehow "magically fixed" unless all manufacturers adopt P-CAV/CAV DVD recording like Plexor did with the 712 series... Or everyone writes at 6.0 X max, since that is the fastest CLV speed (i.e. no zones).

I haven't noticed any problems with the LiteOn 832S at 8x........... every disc burned plays perfectly in everything that I own.

True, but thats why I inverted problem, since it in practice is not noticeable (besides the contrasting zones on the recorded side).

It all depends on how each manufacturer makes its writing strategy and firmware optimization...

While P-CAV avoids visible steps, writing discontinuities, and is faster overall, it brings back the problem that CD-RW drives had to solve, of working with a continually sliding strategy.

It should be easier to produce lower error rates with zone-CLV than with P-CAV.

You would be surprised now, to see a CD-RW drive that wasn't P-CAV (or even fully CAV at max speed)



Another firmware issue - in several reviews, it's been mentioned that the popular Mediatek chipset for DVD writers supports Mt. Rainier, but, unless I've missed one, we have yet to see the makers bother to implement it.

Probably Mt. Rainier has been left alone at the dust with so many other promising technologies, most people care more about DVD writing and DL media, than Mt. Rainier anyway

Much agreed.... I never used it anyway, it seems useless..... I mean how hard is it to just burn an ISO disc instead of using packet writing? Seems useless to me.

Mt Rainier seems a good technology to improve the endurance of CD-RW media, but as we said, probably since mainly Philips promoted, didn't managed to get global acceptance
