Intel Adds Laughter into Mobile Messaging

Intel isadding some fun to communication with the launch of Pocket Avatars, a new over-the-top (OTT) mobile messaging app developed by Intel Labs technologists.

With a standard smartphone camera, users will be able to create customized messages using 3D images of their favorite characters, including American Greetings Care Bears, Annoying Orange, Gumby and Pokey , LEGO characters, Mr. Bill and the San Diego Chicken.

Pocket Avatars captures a user's facial expressions, head movements and voice, and then maps this data onto a 3D character. Avatars can smile big and small, blink, raise & lower eyebrows, stick out their tongue and blow a kiss. This is all enabled by special algorithms that can capture diverse image conditions such as changing light and moving subjects.

Messages can be shared through the app, on social media, or via text message and email.

Pocket Avatars is free and available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Intel plans to further improve the app with new features and capabilities, including a new avatars and improved tracking technology with new facial expressions that operate in a broader range of lighting environments.
