New ARM Processors To Power Small Wearables

ARM will soon design the ARM Cortex-M processor series, which targets the Internet of Things technology, wearable devices and embedded applications markets, ARM executives said at a pre-show press conference ahead of this year's Computex Taipei computer trade show.

The new processors will be designed at a new center in the Hsinchu Science Park in Taiwan, the company's first in Asia and its fourth in the world. The center is slated to open at the end of 2014.

The new CPUs and microcontrollers are being developed for the whole range from tiny data-collecting wearables to wearables such as smartglasses that require more processing power, ARM executives said.

The processors could consume just nanowatts of power and be in wearables that blend with the body easily, according to ARM. They are also extremely snall in size

The new wearable CPU designs will put the sensors close to digital signal processors (DSPs), so data can be quickly processed for interaction with smartphones or other data collecting instruments.
