SK Hynix To Develop Its Own eMMC Controllers

SK Hynix is expected use in-house developed controller chips for its eMMC devices in 2014, taking advantage of the acquisition of the eMMC device controller unit of Taiwan-based Innostor Technology in August 2013.

SK Hynix is currently using eMMC device controllers mainly from Silicon Motion Technology, according to a Digitimes.com report, which did not clarify whether SK Hynix would continue to work with its partner after rolling out its own controllers.

The move would allow the Koeran Company boost its competitiveness in the eMMC field.

Samsung Electronics and Toshiba/SanDisk are already developing their own eMMC device controllers, while they also procuring chips from flash device controller companies.

Kingston Technology has also formed a joint venture with flash device controller supplier Phison Electronics.

Micron Technology is reportedly is looking to establish a team engaged in the development of eMMC device controller solutions. The US firm is currently buying flash controller chips mainly from Phison.
