LG Ultra-definition 84-in TV To Be Released Next Month

LG said its 84-inch 4k TV is going to be in stores in October for $20,000, before the release of its 55-inch TV set.

The massive TV, which has four times the resolution of standard HDTVs (3,840 by 2,160 pixels), appeared last week at the IFA show in Berlin, Germany.

It is obvious that Korean company wants to release its set before Sony, which also announced plans to release a similar 4K TV set in December. Sony's model will be priced at $25,000.

LG claims that its 84-inch UD 3D TV i offers sharp picture quality coupled with an enormous screen that boasts 8 million pixels, thanks to LG's Triple XD Engine and the Resolution Upscaler Plus. The TV is also equipped with a 2.2 Speaker along with Smart TV features.

With the weak demand for 3D-enabled, internet-connected HDTVs, TV makers are now trying to market their so-called ultra-definition models. However, very little video content available that can take advantage of the higher resolution. There are no cable or satellite channels at that resolution, and Blu-ray discs max out at HDTV resolution. On the other hand, the 4K TVs are expected to upscale full HD content to 4K.

Both OLED TV and UD 3D TV are Premium products and will be launched in strategic markets.

LG has warned that if and when a standard for "4K" broadcasts is developed, these first sets may not be compatible.

According to a recent report, LG Display will reportedly start mass production of White OLED (WOLED) TV panels not earlier than 2013, pushing back the company's plans to release its massive 55" OLED TV this year.
