Panasonic And NHK Showcase Huge Super-high Vision Plasma Display

Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK ) and and Panasonic have jointly developed a 145-inch plasma display panel (PDP) supporting the super-high vision (SHV) resolution - 7,680 x 4,320 pixels or 16 times the resolution of HDTV.

The self-luminous direct-view-type SHV display device features a pixel pitch of 0.411mm, a 60ppi resolution and opearates at a frequency of 60Hz. Other specifications such as brightness, contrast ratio, color gamut and thickness are equivalent to those of existing PDPs. Panasonic suggests a 1.6m viewing distance for the display, in order to enjoy realistic viewing.

NHK and Panasonic started the development of the PDP in April 2007. This time, they made a prototype at Panasonic's Amagasaki Fifth Plant, which is currently not being used.

NHK and Panasonic are planning to develop 70/80-inch models of the display for home use.

NHK and Sharp had also announced an 85-inch LCD display in May 2011.
