Latest AVCHD Format Standard Supports 3D Content

Panasonic and Sony have updated the specifications the AVCHD Format to Version 2.0, adding new features for AVCHD 3D and 1080/60p,50p.

AVCHD is a high definition (HD) digital video camera recorder format that allows for recording and playback high-resolution, digital HD images using 8cm DVD media or SD memory cards. The format is popular in Japan, where BS digital HD broadcasting and digital terrestrial broadcasting have been expanding since 2006.

Today the companies have jointly released the AVCHD Format to Version 2.0, which supports AVCHD 3D and 1080/60p,50p video.



The "AVCHD 3D" is an HD digital video camera format for recording 1080/60i/50i/24p and 720/60p/50p signals onto SD memory cards by using highly efficient codec technologies. The format employs MPEG-4 MVC/H.264 codec for video compression.

Sony's "HDR-TD10" camcorder is currently 3D video recording in full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 / 60i. In addition, AVCHD Progressive 1080/60p/50p will be supported by Sony's Handycam and Cyber-shot models that will be released this year.
