Samsung Display is showcasing a wide range of display products at this year's SID 2018 event, including an unbreakable steering wheel display, a glasses-free 3D instrument panel for automobiles, a water-resistant multi-pressure sensor for smartphones and a 65-inch 8K TV panel based on QD glass.

SID 2018 is hosted by The Society for Information Display, at LA Convention Center in Los Angeles, USA, on May 22.

Samsung Display put organic OLED (organic light emitting diode) on the front. The Rollerbild CID (Center Information Display) allows you to adjust the screen size in 9 steps (inches), 11.8s, 14s, etc., and you can easily control various functions such as navigation, music appreciation, It is designed to operate.

A 12.4-inch S-curve CID, based on the latest trends in automotive design that emphasizes elegant curvaceous designs, has a curved design, as well as a 1200x1920 (182ppi, pixels per inch) resolution and a maximum brightness of 800 knits ).

A 6.22-inch unbreakable steering wheel display is covered with a plastic cover on an unbreakable flexible OLED board so that the driver does not see secondary damage even in the event of an accident. The digital instrument panel which is considered as the key device of future autonomous vehicle is also introduced. Samsung Display's new product, OLED-based, non-eyewear 3D display, displays various driving information in vivid 3D images.

Samsung Display will also showcase next-generation mobile and LCD technologies.

The 'Aqua Sensor', introduced as one of the 'Future Display', is an 'underwater multi-pressure touch sensor' technology, and can be used freely in water even when applied to a waterproof smartphone.

A future smartphone sound technology is also revealed. Samsung Display's "SoD (Sound on Display)" is a technology that can mount a vibration device on the display and produce the sound through panel vibration.

New products designed for the VR / AR market are also on display:

  • A 2.43 inches, 1,200 ppi (pixels per inch) VR uses two OLED displays and a total resolution of 3,840 x 2,160.
  • "AR Light Field" display, which combines augmented reality with 3D for the first time in the world, is also on display. By applying this technology, it is possible to express a virtual character or space in an AR game as a perfect stereoscopic image, thus realizing a more realistic AR.

Samsung Display is also developing a 65-inch 'QD Glass' product with a resolution of 8K. QD glass is a technology that applies quantum dot material directly to a diffusion plate of glass material (an optical part that diffuses the backlight uniformly) unlike the conventional method of attaching a Quantum dot sheet to a backlight.

Samsung Display local rival LG Display also unveiled at the event a liquid crystal display (LCD) based car display. It is based on low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology and has high electron mobility and low current leakage. The company showcases a 12.3-inch QHD (four times as high as HD) display and a 16.2-inch display for passenger seats to replace the existing analog instrument panel. The 14.3-inch CID with touch technology of LG Display is also introduced, allowing viewers to experience various displays as if they were used in real cars.

LG Display also showcases a 77-inch transparent flexible OLED display. It was developed for the first time in the world by LG Display last year in the UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution with the transparency of 40% and the curvature radius of 80R (radius of 80mm radius).
