Message Text: Sharp has developed high-brightness, small-size LED for the backlight of LCD panels with a wide color gamut.

The Japanese company will start to ship samples of the LED on Aug 6, and will initiate mass production in September. Samples are available for 40 Yen.

The GM4BN6F3S0A LED realizes a total luminous flux (brightness) of 8.3lm with a 90% color gamut on NTSC standards. The brightness is 12% higher than that of Sharp’s previous product (GM4BN6B3S0A, 7.4lm). The high brightness was realized by improving the luminous efficiency of the blue LED chip, a redesigned package and changes in the combination ratios of the red and green fluorescent materials, according to Sharp.

In addition, improvements to the packaging technology allowed Sharp to make the LED 30% smaller than that the previous product. The width of the LED package was reduced from 3.8 to 3mm, and its power consumption has remained unchanged.
