Message Text: Facebook is introducing hashtags, the number signs used on Twitter, Instagram and other services to identify topics being discussed and allow users to search for them.

Similar to other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or Pinterest, hashtags on Facebook will allow users to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion. When users click on a hashtag in Facebook, they'll see a feed of what other people and Pages are saying about that event or topic.

Users will be also able to search for a specific hashtag from their search bar, click on hashtags that originate on other services, such as Instagram as well as compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results.

Facebook added that users would control the audience for their posts, including those with hashtags.

Facebook said hashtags are a first step toward making it easier for users to find out what others are discussing.

"We'll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world's conversations," wrote Greg Lindley, product manager for hashtags, in the post.

Facebook said it will make the clickable hashtags available to users in the coming weeks, beginning on Wednesday.
