Executives from Samsung and Corning have been reportedly met in Korea and the industry is speculating that they have discussed ways to solidify their existing joint businesses and to expand their cooperation in next generation materials.
ETnews.com
today reported that the heads of Samsung and Corning met in Korea at Samsung?s corporate guest house, Seungjiwon, in Seoul.
Glass specialist Corning could be concerned about Samsung's thoughts to change the material for its flexible display from glass to plastic, an issue that would give a lot of ground for discussions between the two companies.
Corning's Gorilla Glass is used to make most of the cover glass that go into Samsung's smartphones and pads. Samsung has been procuring the Gorilla Glass based cover glass through Chinese vendors, so Samsung may have asked Corning for a direct supply of Gorilla Glass to self-produce the cover glass.
The companies may have also discussed ways expand their mid-to-long-term technical cooperation in OLED circuit boards, touch screen panel circuit boards, mobile device cover glass and circuit board and glass for solar cells.
