Message Text: Seagate will soon launch its first 4TB Desktop HDD featuring 1TB of storage per platter.

The company's previous 4TB offerings used five platters with 800GB of storage capacity per platter.

The 4TB/4 disk desktop solution is achieving a data rate of 160 MB/second while saving 35% in power consumption over competitive drives, according to Seagate. Seagate's OptiCache technology has been also incorporated boosting overall performance by as much as 45%.

The drive is equipped with a SATA 6 Gb/s interface.

Seagate also announced that it has now shipped 2 billion HDDs globally, four year after reaching the 1 billion mark.

Seagate is battling with Western Digital for market leadership in both revenue and shipments, especially in the enterprise business segment. According to iSupply data, while Seagate had a 50 percent share of the enterprise market last year, the introduction by Western Digital of its new helium technology could catapult the manufacturer to the top at the end of 2013, dethroning Seagate in the process.
