Message Text: Taiwan-based blank optical disc makers will reportedly diversify their business operations towards the production of light guide plates (LGP), which is a core component of backlight units (BLUs) used in display panels.

CMC Magnetics, Prodisc Technology and Gigastorage are all planning to stepp into the production of light guide plates,Digitimes.com reported today citing Taiwan-based light guide plate makers.

The optical disc makers will take advantage of their existing optical disc manufacturing equipment, specifically injection molding machines, to produce light guide plates, the sources said.

However, it might be difficult to produce light guide plates for over 7-inch tablets, due to mechanical specification limits.
