ZTE Open C Firefox OS Phone Available on eBay, OS Updated

Sales of the ZTE Open C Firefox OS phone have started on eBay, based on the latest Firefox OS update.

Targeted at first time smartphone users and early adopters wanting to try out Firefox OS, the Open C offers a 3MP camera and 4-inch WVGA screen, and is the first commercially available phone running the latest version of Firefox OS.

The phone, currently on sale on eBay US, UK, Germany and Global Buying Hub sites, feature a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor based on the A7 architecture.

It is the first smartphone to ship with the latest version of Firefox OS, bringing performance improvements, enhanced messaging and multimedia capabilities to first time smartphone users at US$99.99.

The latest version of Firefox OS offers many new features including: better email functionality with POP3 support, enhanced MMS capabilities, direct music player access from the lock screen or notifications bar, improved sorting of Gallery media to make it easier to find photos and advanced Bluetooth sharing to allow multiple files to be transferred simultaneously. Users can also now get to where they want to go faster with enhanced scrolling performance and system app (e.g. calendar, address book, camera) startup times.

It also includes several new features including Dual-SIM dual-standby (DSDS) support offering the flexibility of having two separate SIMs. App developers will also have access to platform technologies such as WebGL, asm.js and WebAudio for creating games with audio effects.

In addition, the latest update includes NFC enablers starting with the availability of the WebNFC API. Developers will be able to begin experimenting with NFC pairing and tag reading in their apps, with additional NFC functionality coming in futures updates.

The latest Firefox OS is currently available to Mozilla partners to implement in smartphones.
