Google To Offer Fibre Network in Uganda

Google's Project Link has become a wholesale access provider for operators in Kampala, Uganda.

Google has launched Project Link, a fibre network access project for developing countries that has already begun in Kampala, Uganda.

Project Link is an initiative to build a super-fast, high-capacity fiber network to enable any local mobile operator or Internet service provider (ISP) to connect more people in Kampala to a faster Internet.

Project Link's network is available today to connect providers to long-distance fiber lines, equipping them with near-unlimited capacity to build and expand services to Ugandans.

"As more of Africa comes online, the Web will grow stronger and richer from the contributions of a growing population. Project Link isn't just about connecting fiber cables. It's about connecting the people of Kampala and giving them an opportunity to contribute to a truly global Internet," Kai Wulff, an access field director for the project, wrote on Google's Africa blog.

Google is already offering Google Fibre in the US, where the company sells broadband access to end-users.

And Google has also launched Project Loon, a balloon-powered connectivity project with ambitions to deliver better internet access to poorly-connected parts of the world.
