LG Brings Curved OLED TVs To The U.S.

LG Electronics today introduced the first OLED TV for sale to customers in the United States. First unveiled at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, LG's CURVED OLED TV (Model 55EA9800) will be available exclusively at Best Buy.

Global demand for OLED TV is expected to grow to more than 7 million units by 2016, according to DisplaySearch. LG commercializes both the flat screen OLED TV, which went on sale in Korea in January, and the new CURVED OLED TV, which began sales in Korea in April.

Featuring a gently curved screen and LG's own WRGB OLED technology, the CURVED OLED TV promises to offer exceptional picture quality. The LG 55EA9800 is also the first OLED TV in the world to receive THX certification.

At only 0.17 inches (4.3 millimeters) thin at the edge of the screen and weighing less than 38 pounds (17.2 kilograms), the new OLED TV promises to produce vivid and realistic images thanks to LG's proprietary WRGB technology. The WRGB four-color pixel system features a white sub-pixel that works in conjunction with conventional red, green and blue pixels to create the color output. LG's Color Refiner delivers even greater tonal enhancement.

The LG CURVED OLED TV is also the first OLED TV to achieve THX Display Certification.

Complementing its screen design, the LG CURVED OLED TV features thin transparent film speakers in a crystal clear stand.

The LG CURVED OLED TV also benefits from the features including: Smart TV capabilities with Magic Remote and Voice Recognition features to enable gesture and voice controls, and LG CINEMA 3D capabilities.

The new TV is based on the technology developed by LG Display, in which LG Electronics owns a 37.9-percent stake.

LG Display announced Monday it will jack up spending on organic light-emitting diode (OLED).

In the meantime, LG's rival Samsung Electronics is also bringing the Samsung KN55S9, a 55-inch OLED TV with a slightly curved screen, in the U.S. as early as this week. The Samsung TV will retail for $14,999.
