Samsung has acquired TV digital recording device company Boxee, the company said on Wednesday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Boxee is a cloud-based DVR that lets viewers watch recordings anywhere. Boxee also makes video-streaming applications for phones and tablets based on Android and Apple's iOS operating systems. Samsung is expected to implement Boxee's technology into its connected devices such as Internet-connected TV sets.
Boxee's team said that the beta Cloud DVR functionality the company provided to certain Boxee TV users would be discontinued on July 10th, meaning that users will not have access to their existing recordings after that date.
Samsung is the latest company that is trying to expand into the streaming video market, following Apple, Google and possibly Intel. Offering video streaming is a good way to hook consumers with the connected devices devices. Microsoft and Sony are also set to release new game consoles that emphasize features for streaming and downloading entertainment content.
