I just got some new 8X DVD-Rs today (Taiyo Yuden TYG02) and wanted to try them out, so I load up Nero and low and behold, it lets me burn at 16X! So naturally I'm happy as heck. Unfortunately, when I burned a full disc, it took 19 minutes. What exactly is going wrong here? Oh yeah, firmware...umm I just flashed the latest firmware from Benq's site last week but I can't remember for the life of me what it was called.

Can you check if DMA is enabled?

Was this copying on the fly or from your hard drive?

My DMA is set at Let BIOS Select Transfer Mode and in the window its Ultra DMA 2 - 33. I was copying from the hard drive.

I have had no trouble with other media. I usually burn 4x discs and they burn in around 15 minutes.

Use Nero InfoTool to see what firmware version you have.

Just burned another disc at 8X. This one took 18 minutes. I burned at supposedly half the speed and it finished 1 minute faster and still slower than burning my other discs at 4X!! What the #$@$??? When I start the burn it goes right up to 2%, then sits there for 2-3 minutes and then slowly finishes the burn. All Nero says during this time is, "Book Type Automatically Set To - DVD-ROM". This is kind of irritating, I hope somebody can shed some light on things.

Do you have the burner and the HD on the same IDE cable?

What Nero reports is normal.

The media you have are TY oem or branded?

What about the condition of your HD? Is DMA enable on you HD?

well it's -R media, benq is better with +R
You can try the Latest T firmware (maybe they improved burning for that type of media) or the chinese S firmware.

here a link for the B7S9
http://service.benq.com.hk/HKUploadFile/Drivers/ZIP/DW1620_Firmware_B7S9.zip

T is here
ftp://62.253.210.196/dvd-rw/firmware/dw1620pro/

And when is the last time you defraged youre HD?

Someone else had the same issue in different forum and returned the drive. I too am able to burn @16x but it only takes me 7:00 mins.
The individual with that problem was also able to burn tyg02 @16x in different drive so it was hard to say if it was the media or the drive because he only had trouble with that media. As said might want to try latest firmware.
Is that fuji branded tyg02?

The burner and the hard drive are NOT on the same IDE cable. Also, the media is branded Burnmaster from All Media Outlet I think. My hard drive hasn't been defragged in ages, but that doesnt' stop me from burning 4X media at the proper speed. I'll try some of those firmware and report back.

A defragmatation of the HD you put the files would be good.

Ugh, none of those firmware work for my drive. They all say "drive not supported". The only one that works is the G7P9, which if I remember correctly from Benq's site, means my drive is the DW1620A, not sure if that makes any difference. Geez, since there's really no firmware to try I guess I'm gonna have to see about sending this drive back. I hope DealSurprise has a good return policy.
