I have 13GB of Mp3s on my hard drive which i want to remove because of the amount of room it is taking up and was wondering if it is possible for my me to compress them even more so they will fit on as few CDs as possible? If this is possible and will it impair the sound quality of these files for when uncompressed again? Thanks

Truthfully, You could zip them up, however, it would probably only give you about 1-3 percent compression, because MP3's are already compressed wave files, therefore, you cannot really compress them any further, and sometimes, zipping them up would create a slightly larger file.

MP3Mogul is 100% correct! it doesn't get much better then MP3 compression. On the bright side, think of how much space you're already saving

You could convert them to WMA files....same quality, half the size

That would depend on the encoding rate also.

True...But a 64kb/s WMA is the equivalent to 128kb/s in MP3 terms, and 128 is usually considered CD quality and this is good enough for most of us.

That's IF you want WMA files, personally I won't touch them. I don't trust microsoft's formats, whether it's ASF, WMA, or their own .avi codecs. Plus I've almost never found the quality to be equivilant, let alone better. but that's just me

Planks Law: Hey bud, don't worry! your suggestion is perfectly valid. I wasn't trying to jump down your throat or anything. I just really hate microsoft and don't trust them, or the formats they are trying to make a standard, but it doesn't make your suggestion wrong

Just to throw another log on the fire!!! Just Kidding... I'm with Dolphinius, I have never trusted Microsoft, never have, and never will, and I too agree, that the sound quality of wma files are not equal to MP3's. But hey, that's just another opinion.

hmm, i've heard people claim that wma is better than mp3 at lower bitrates. probably no comparison when you are using 192+ on mp3 though.

and for the "i don't trust microsoft" talk, i'm sure you guys are all using windows (and probably XP which connects to MS's servers more than the previous versions) ... nice tough talk ... heh heh ... http://www.hevanet.com/peace/microsoft.htm

No worries mate,i dont use WMA either!!!

But it's all down to derekb and how precious collection is,it's just another option he could take, because lets be honest there arn't that many open to him,by my reconning(thats if ive done my maths right)its gonna take nearly 19 discs for the 13GB's he's got.

He could buy a DVD RW though

Rabbit: Actually, I refuse to run WinXP, I run Win2000, and ONLY out of neccessity. I would prefer to run Linux, but it doesn't support the software I require. Plus I need to be versed in the WinOS's in order to get a good job in the fields I am interrested in there is something to be said about knowing your enemy too

Plank's Law: DVDs would be a good suggestion, if it's within his personal budget Or perhaps picking up the new Plextor premium drive, which allows 980MB storage on standard 700MB CD-Rs. That would help a little too.

Well there is a way to save some space. If you were to have all those MP3s in one partition and then use Ghost to image that partition to could get those 13 gig onto 10-13 discs using the highest compression. Then you could use Ghost Eplorer to get them off the discs any time you needed too.....
