Hey guys!!!

I'm looking for a fast DVD-Rom to compliment my NEC 3500A. Its mainly gonna be used for ripping movies. I've read the post on the AOpen 1648/AAP and would really like to get this drive but unfortunately it is not available in my country (I can only get the 1648A). Toshiba is also not available. So now I need some advice from you guys.

Okay...I can get these drives...AOpen (only 1648A), LiteOn, Sony, Samsung, Benq, LG, BTC, MSI, ASUS, Teac. Which one do you recommend???

I believe the LiteOn drives are very good. Can you tell me which model is the best one to get (167T or 166S)??? Also I believe that Sony use LiteOn drives. If so, does anyone know which LiteON drive the Sony DDU1621 is???

I just posted almost the exact question ... emperor recommended the following....

"a LiteON 167T with patched firmware can rip up to 16X with DVD+R and 10X with DVD+R9 media."

I havent bought it yet, but am going to order it... with a 3500A.

Here is a shot from a Generic Dvd-ROM a BTC but won't upgrade the firmware from BTC's Update site. Is this Fast-----Slow rip for a pressed movie?

Beware of something that seems like a Liteon (or maybe is one) "DVD-16X3H" - it does not lend itself to firmware hacking, nor is it easy to find more recent firmware for.

The graph above, showing 10x CAV mode foir a double layer movie, and smooth too, is pretty good!

"riplocked" drives tend to do only 2x CLV foe movies, and some drives won't go higher than 8x on double layer (or written media of any kind).
So the plot above is of a drive with no artificial speed limiting, other than perhaps a conservative throttle back to 10x on double layer.

Hey Emperor...quick question...do you know if the Sony DDU1621 is a Liteon 167T??? I'm looking for the drive in black and I dont know if the Liteon is available in black (the Sony is though).

Well I would suggest that you get the new Asus 616 I use it with my NEC 3500a and have no problems at all and it is very quick at ripping dvd's with DVD Shrik !!!

I think its a LiteON 166S, not 100% sure about this

Just some info about the Sony drives...just did some research and it appears that the Sony dvd-rom drives are rebadged BTC drives. Just thought you guys might wanna know...

Emperor...the older Sony dvd-rom drive is a Liteon 166S. Is the 166s better than the 167t???

I had the DDU1621 in the past. It was not fast, not so good error correcection and was tired early.

Some Sony dvd-roms are BTC OEMs. Some are LiteOn OEMs.

DDU-1621 was BTC and while it was amongst the most silent, it had absolutely no working dvd error correction at all. If it would hit even a minor amount of errors, it would just freeze.

But in optical tracking performance (esp. on audio cds) it was really good, imho.

Ignoring 1648/AAP for now, the drive that I would recommend is:

- Pioneer DVD-120SZ (also under Asus brand)
or
- BenQ DVP1650S

both have higher error correction for DVD5/DVD9 (according to c't magazine) than LiteON XJ-HD166S and rip almost as fast (BenQ) or faster (Pioneer).

The LiteOn is no slouch either and not a bad choice, imho.

All of them are very noisy though, if that matters to you at all.

Thanks for the info Halcyon!!! Noise doesn't bother me at all...after all, I have gotten used to my Liteon cd-writer. Do you know if the Asus e616 is the same drive as the Pioneer 120SZ??? Man...I hate it when I can't get what I want...

While the LiteOns are well known as great DVD-ROM drives, I have a BTC. The drive is very good at ripping movies, and particularly strong at extracting audio. If you find one cheap, it can be a good alternative. Also, a very quiet drive.
