hi!

today I got a Panasonic 9.4GB DVD-RAM disc and I've some questions about it.
The Media has a Side A and Side B.

I've been thinking getting the Panasonic DMR-E55 which will allow me to record 120 minutes
with the best rcording quality on this media.

but does it really work out that way?
I mean if I want to record a football game (90+ minutes) will it after 60 minutes start recording
on side B or must I change sides manually?

you have to flip the disc upside down to get the extra 4.7GB...unfortunaly

I've never worked/seen DVD+R DL discs.
how do they work, are they also "double sided" that needs to be turned?

Do you by any chance know if the Philips DVD-recorders handle DVD+R DL disks?

damn, I was 99% sure I would get the DMR-E55, heard so much good about it...
But I won't buy any DVD-recorder that won't even let me record a football game on a so called 9.4GB disc using the highest quality option!!!

Double Layer and Double Side are two totally different things as you might understand, many DVD players have no problems if the DVD+R DL media burned with DVD-ROM booktype

But do you know if philips recorders can record on DVD+R DL discs?

cause if the say you get 60 minutes on a 4.7GB then I was thinking if they can handle a DL disc then you can record 120 min. on them...

From DVDRW885 drive and after, all drives can.

While we are on the subject - does anyone know whether a panasonic standalone should play dual layer disks? Do I assume there will be a problem because dual layer is a +R format and panasonic read only -R and -RAM? I thought I read somewhere that dual layer is the true DVD Video format and all modern players should read it - but I'm new to all this and dont know what to believe at present. I'm thinking of buying a panasonic standalone and my PC will burn dual layer using pioneer 108 that says it has bitsetting to make all dual layer disks into 'DVD-ROM format' on burning(whatever that means).

I'm italian, I have got 2 drivers DVD-RAM: Panasonic LF-D521 (also DVD-RW/-R) and LG GSA-4040B (Super DVD multi). Both 2 drivers are original version without firmware.
I have many DVD-RAM medias with and without cartridges (and camcorder) also others brands: 2.6GB, 2.8GB (8cm), 4.7GB, 5.2GB and 9.4GB.

The drive Panasonic does support all DVD-RAM media also 2.6GB/5.2GB writing and recording.
The drive LG does support DVD-RAM media in the use 4.7GB of type II or 9.4GB of Type IV can remove from cartridge before burning, but DVD-RAM 5.2GB/9.4GB of Type I (non-removable) or DVD-RAM 2.6GB of Type II (removable) aren't compatible with LG drives.
Media (brand original Ritek and ProDisc) DVD-R 9.4GB and DVD+R 9.4GB (these aren't DVD DL 8.5GB, but double side) can use in drive LG. The DVD-RAM 2.8GB media (old or new mini-cartridge 8cm) can use either camcorder or burning (can remove from mini-cartridge!).

For enzo78 advise to acquire driver LG Super DVD multi (DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R DL 8.5GB/+RW/+R and DVD-R/DVD+R 9.4GB included) last model for you, please.
Also I'm buying and I prefer to wait for new model LG with DVD-R DL 8.5GB and DVD-RW 6x and perhaps DVD-RAM 16x (I'm sure DVD-RAM 5x) that it will begin to september.

P.S.: the DVD-RAM 2.6GB/5.2GB media (before/after formatted) doesn't support DVD recorder!
